How long do you have to be unemployed to get SSDI benefits?

How long do you have to be unemployed to be eligible to receive SSD?

Some people get confused on this point...

To get benefits you must have a severe health condition which is expected to last for at least 12 continuous months. Do you have to wait 12 continuous months to apply for benefits? No, you can apply as soon as you are unable to perform what the SSA calls substantial gainful activity.

Another point to consider, there is a 5 month waiting period before you can receive SSDI benefits but given the lengthy approval process this is generally not an issue for most claimants.
