Definition of Earned Income

The Social Security Administration considers earned income as any of the following: wages, certain royalties, honoraria, sheltered workshop payments and net earnings from self-employment. The Social Security Administration supplies Supplemental Security Income benefits to blind disabled or aged individuals who meet specific income and resource limitations. The amount of earned income can lower the amount of Supplemental Security Income benefits awarded to claimants.
