Impairments that Affect Multiple Body Systems

The Social Security Administration (SSA) considers an impairment any mental or physical health condition which affects a major body system and is expected to keep an individual from performing gainful activity for at least 12 continuous months. For children, because they are not working, the condition must be "marked and cause severe functional limitations" to qualify for benefits.

The SSA maintains a listing of impairments and their corresponding systems which they consider automatically disabling. There is a list for both adults and children. To be considered automatically disabled you must meet the nonmedical requirements for SSI or SSDI benefits and your condition must meet the criteria in the Listing of Impairments or be considered as severe as a listed impairment.
