What is Application For Benefits?

Definition of Application For Benefits

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Claimants must complete a Social Security Disability (SSD) application. The Social Security Disability application processing generally takes 30-90 days. Applications for benefits can be completed online, in person or over the phone. Personal and financial information must be provided to the Social Security Administration (name, Social Security number, spouse's information and bank account information). Up to 70% of initial Social Security Disability applications are denied. Social Security Disability claimants can file a reconsideration, which is the first step in the Social Security Disability appeal process, if they are denied Social Security Disability benefits. All reconsiderations must be filed within 60 days of receiving the SSD denial letter. Exceptions for the appeal deadline may be made by the Social Security Administration if the claimant has "good cause".
