What is Medium Work?

Definition of Medium Work

Medium work, as defined by the Social Security Administration, requires claimants to frequently lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds and frequently stoop and crouch. Most jobs rated as medium will not be performed in the seated position but will require the claimant to walk or stand approximately 6 hours out of an 8 hour work day. Social Security Disability claimants must also have the ability to grasp, hold and turn objects as opposed to the precise use of the fingers which may be required for Social Security Disability claimants who are limited to sedentary work. Claimants who are unable to perform heavy work due to their physical residual functional capacity may be relegated to medium work.
