Qualifications to receive SSDI and SSI benefits in Jersey City

In This Section:

Jersey City workers who are disabled and unable to work may qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Social Security Disability Insurance is offered by the Federal Government to workers who have a severe mental or physical health condition which does not allow the worker to perform substantial gainful activity (SGA) for at least 12 continuous months.

Workers will only qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance in Jersey City if they have worked jobs "covered" by Social Security and paid enough in payroll taxes to be considered "insured" by the Social Security Administration. Jersey City workers will generally need 20 to 40 work credits to qualify, and the amount of credits will depend on the age of the worker at the time of their disability.

Auxiliary Social Security Disability Insurance benefits may also be paid to qualifying widows, children, and widowers. Social Security Disability Insurance in Jersey City may also provide Medicare to claimants 24 months after the onset date of their disability.

Claimants who have not worked, who have worked but not paid taxes or who have not worked outside of the home will not qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance in Jersey City. The Federal Government does, however, offer Supplemental Security Income benefits to the blind, aged (65 years or older) or disabled. SSI in Jersey City is only given to those qualifying claimants who have limited resources and income. SSI recipients may also be eligible for Medicaid, in most states, at the time of approval.
