Qualifications to receive SSI and SSDI benefits in Raleigh

In This Section:

Raleigh workers who are disabled and no longer able to work may qualify for Social Security Disability benefits provided by the Federal Government. The Federal Government offers Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) to workers who have a severe mental or physical health disorder which does not allow them to work or perform "substantial gainful activity" for at least 12 continuous.

To qualify for SSDI in Raleigh, workers must have earned approximate 20-40 work credits over the course of their employment working jobs covered by Social Security and paying payroll taxes. The amount of work credits needed to be insured for Raleigh SSDI varies by age at the time of disability. Most full-time workers can earn 4 work credits per year.

Auxiliary SSDI benefits may also be paid (under certain conditions) to widows, children, widowers, and disabled adults (if they were disabled before they turned 22).

Not all disabled individuals qualify for SSDI. Claimants who have not work or who have not paid taxes will not be considered insured and will be denied benefits, regardless of the severity of their health condition.

The Federal Government does, however, offer another monthly cash assistance benefit called Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for claimants who are blind, aged (65 years or older) or disabled and whose resources and income are very limited. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) claimants may also be eligible for Medicaid, in most states, at the time of approval.
